About the Fellowship

The JSPS International Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan (Standard Program) provides outstanding early-career researchers an opportunity to conduct collaborative research under the supervision of distinguished host researchers at Japanese universities and research institutions.

The fellowship is open to applicants from all academic disciplines, including Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Medical Sciences, Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Agriculture, and interdisciplinary research fields. Fellows will gain access to Japan's world-class research ecosystem while building long-term international collaborations.

Fellowship Benefits

Selected fellows will receive:

• Monthly maintenance allowance of JPY 362,000
• Round-trip economy class airfare
• Settling-in allowance of JPY 200,000
• Overseas travel insurance
• Opportunity to conduct research at leading Japanese universities and research institutes
• Additional research support through the host researcher under JSPS research grants (where applicable)

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

• Be citizens of countries having diplomatic relations with Japan.
• Hold a Ph.D. degree awarded on or after 2 April 2021, or be expected to obtain the doctoral degree before the fellowship begins.
• Secure acceptance from an eligible Japanese host researcher.
• Demonstrate outstanding research achievements and potential.
• Meet all eligibility conditions specified in the official JSPS application guidelines.

Fellowship Duration

• 12 to 24 Months

Selection Process

Applications will be evaluated based on:

• Academic excellence
• Research achievements
• Quality and feasibility of the proposed research plan
• Recommendation from the Japanese host researcher
• Final review and selection by the JSPS International Program Committee

The host institution will submit the application electronically through the JSPS Electronic Application System on behalf of the applicant. Direct applications from candidates are not accepted.
