Position: Doctoral Researcher Department: Physics (Accelerator Laboratory) Research Area: Optical and chemical characterization of slow liquid scintillators for neutrinoless double beta decay and rare‑event searches Project: Academy Research Fellowship project “Bridging Detector and Nuclear Physics for Next‑Generation Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with Slow Liquid Scintillators” (PI: Dr. Mariia Fedkevych, Research Council of Finland, 2026–2030) Start Date: January 1, 2027 (or as soon as possible thereafter) Duration: Fixed term, 3.5 years
Eligibility Criteria
Master’s degree in Physics or related field (Chemistry, Optical Science).
Strong background in experimental physics or physical chemistry.
Required: • Hands‑on experimental skills and interest in laboratory work • Basic programming knowledge (Python, C++, or similar) • Good written and spoken English • Willingness to travel for research visits and beam campaigns
Advantageous: • Experience in optical spectroscopy, photon detection, scintillator characterization • Laboratory experience with chemical handling or detector instrumentation • Data analysis skills • Familiarity with Geant4, ROOT, or ML methods
Experience Requirements
Synthesis and preparation of slow‑LS samples with varying dopant concentrations.
Measurement of optical properties (absorption/emission spectra, decay‑time constants, attenuation lengths).
Evaluation of chemical compatibility, stability, and purification efficiency.
Database creation of validated optical parameters for Geant4 simulations and ML‑based event reconstruction.
Participation in in‑beam characterization campaigns at INFN Legnaro National Laboratory (Italy).
Contribution to scientific publications, reports, and conferences.
Salary / Funding
Salary based on Finnish University Salary System (demand level 2–4).
Starting salary approx. €2,500/month (gross).
Holiday bonus included.
Salary progression with thesis advancement.
Six‑month trial period at start.
