Overview
About Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore)
Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore) is one of India's premier Institutes of National Importance, established by the Government of India to promote excellence in higher education, scientific research, and technological innovation. The institute is recognized for its world-class research facilities, interdisciplinary collaborations, and contributions to cutting-edge advancements in engineering, science, and technology.
The Department of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Engineering (DAASE) at IIT Indore actively conducts advanced research in astrophysics, space science, computational physics, plasma physics, and space engineering through nationally and internationally funded research projects.
About the Fellowship
Applications are invited for the position of Junior Research Fellow (JRF) under the ANRF (Advanced Research Grant) funded research project titled "Investigation of Magnetospheric Transients: Implications to Geospace and Space Assets."
This project focuses on understanding the complex dynamics of Earth's magnetosphere and the occurrence of transient space weather events such as magnetospheric jets and flux transfer events. These phenomena directly influence the ionosphere and geospace environment and may impact satellites, communication systems, navigation infrastructure, and other space-based assets.
The research project is being carried out in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG), Mumbai, providing selected candidates with an opportunity to work alongside experts in space physics and geospace research.
The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension up to three years based on the candidate's performance and project requirements.
Project Objectives
The selected Junior Research Fellow will contribute to developing advanced computational models and hybrid numerical simulation frameworks to study:
- Evolution of Earth's magnetosphere.
- Magnetospheric transient events.
- Flux Transfer Events (FTEs).
- Magnetospheric jets.
- Ionospheric interactions.
- Geospace environment dynamics.
- Effects of space weather on satellites and space assets.
The project aims to generate scientific insights that can improve the understanding of space weather and help protect critical space-based technologies from adverse environmental conditions.
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be expected to:
- Develop hybrid numerical frameworks for space plasma simulations.
- Perform computational modelling of Earth's magnetosphere.
- Study transient magnetospheric phenomena using scientific computing techniques.
- Analyse satellite and open-source space-based datasets.
- Develop algorithms using C, C++, Python, and AI/ML tools where applicable.
- Collaborate with researchers from IIT Indore and the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism.
- Prepare technical reports, research papers, and conference presentations.
- Participate in research discussions, seminars, workshops, and project meetings.
- Contribute to publications in reputed international journals.
- Support the successful execution of the ANRF-funded research project.
Who Can Apply?
Candidates with qualifications in Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics, Astronomy, Space Science, or Space Engineering who possess a valid GATE, CSIR-UGC NET, JEST, or other eligible national-level examination qualification are encouraged to apply.
Applicants having programming experience in C, C++, Python, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, numerical simulations, astrophysics, or space plasma research will be given preference.
Why Apply?
This fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for young researchers who wish to build a career in space science and computational research.
Benefits include:
