IIT Madras Summer School | Program | Nuclear Sciences & Engineering 2026

Overview

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), under the aegis of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Office of Global Engagement, has announced applications for the Summer School on Nuclear Sciences & Engineering 2026. The program is designed to introduce students to advanced concepts in nuclear engineering and support the development of future talent for clean energy and sustainable technology sectors.

This academic initiative aims to build strong foundations in Nuclear Science and Engineering while creating pathways for students interested in advanced research, simulation, and energy system innovation. The program particularly introduces participants to concept development associated with Micro-Modular Reactors (MMRs), typically operating in the range of 1–10 MWe, which are increasingly viewed as a future-oriented solution for achieving net-zero carbon goals.

The curriculum has been structured to combine theoretical understanding with practical exposure and will guide participants through essential engineering and scientific principles used in nuclear system design and analysis.

Participants will explore multiple core subject areas including:

• Reactor Physics and Nuclear Fundamentals
• Thermal-Hydraulics Principles and System Behaviour
• Nuclear Fuel Systems and Characteristics
• Reactor Core Design Methodologies
• Heat Transfer Mechanisms
• Natural Circulation Concepts
• Introduction to Advanced Multiphysics Approaches
• Scientific Modelling and Simulation Techniques
• Use of Open-Source Literature and Engineering Codes
• Foundations of Multi-Scale and Multi-Physics Model Development

The summer school also provides hands-on exposure to computational learning and modern engineering workflows used across advanced nuclear technology environments.

Learning activities include:

• Expert-led technical sessions
• Guided practical tutorials
• Interactive discussions
• Coding and simulation insights
• Demonstrations of modelling workflows
• Exposure to advanced engineering applications

The program is specially developed for students who wish to build careers in nuclear technologies, computational sciences, energy systems, and interdisciplinary engineering research.

Eligibility is open to:

• B.Tech Students
• M.Tech Students
• PhD Scholars

Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm for learning nuclear science fundamentals and interest in applying engineering concepts to future energy technologies.

Program Duration: 13 July 2026 to 18 July 2026

Venue: IIT Madras, Chennai, India

Interested applicants must complete registration through the official application portal before the deadline.
